Even though there are no commercially available handsets that run on the Google Android platform just yet, that hasn't stopped people from developing applications for it. The TuneWiki app was initially made famous on the iPhone and iPod Touch, and it has already been ported over to Android.

Yes, they are still "just" desktops. I don't think that GNOME or KDE take the desktop idea too far, but rather that other "desktops" aren't really desktops but merely pretty shells to launch stand-alone applications.
