"Hopefully you never had to restore your own system from a compromise and you will not have to do this in the future. Working on several projects to restore a compromised Linux system for various clients, I have developed a set of rules that others might find useful in similar situations.

It's been over a year since the last time I reviewed ( 1 , 2 ) the Linux distribution that I use most of the time, Arch Linux . Since then, while the distro-specific innovations have slowed a bit down, maturity and stability has emerged.

Something obviously went awry
"Anyone else remember when Microsoft used to talk about making Windows Vista (or Longhorn, as it was then known) a fast-booting operating system. Fast, as in cold boots that were 50 percent faster than those possible with Windows XP?

Google has quietly axed the web services API to its eponymous search engine . The stealth move was made without any announcement, but visitors to the page now receive a blunt message, backdated to 5 December, advising them that the SOAP API is no longer supported.

The Mozilla team has more or less accepted Microsoft's help in working on Firefox for Windows Vista. Besides the fact that the two parties are already working together , Mike Beltzner, Mozilla developer, has accepted Microsoft's invitation , saying: "Yes, we'd definitely be interested in getting some 1:1 support."
