PORT ROYAL -- A Hardeeville High School substitute teacher was arrested Thursday and charged with having sex with a 15-year-old boy he met on the Internet, according to the Beaufort Police Department.

Sun Tuesday launched the latest assault on the proprietary Microsoft Word document format by offering a new Sun Grid utility service that will convert Word files into ODF . Another Sun Grid utility will convert text files into audio files for podcasts or for playback on Web sites, said Tom Goguen, vice president with Sun's software group.

Vista is all the rage at the moment (and now even the Sunday Eve Column is about it). I don't think there's a single piece of beta software that has ever been discussed as much as Windows Vista.

In an interesting turn of events, Microsoft has said that the current Aero interface in the latest Vista build (the December CTP) is not the final UI , saying: "There are going to be GUI changes in Vista by the time the final release comes."

Google has made informal complaints to competition authorities in Europe and the US about default settings in Microsoft's IE7. The latest Microsoft browser includes a small window so users can search without opening up a specific page.

On Nov. 3, the US Patent & Trademark Office revealed that Apple has filed patent application 20050246554 titled " system and method for creating tamper-resistant code ." James D. Batson is listed as the sole inventor for application 837413 originally filed in April 2004. This appears to be related to Apple's forthcoming Tiger-Intel platform.

Opera Software is making plans to steal market share from Microsoft . Though a launch date for Opera 10 hasn't yet been set, Opera is hoping the updated application will lure users away from Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 by building on Opera 9's use of small Web applications called widgets.
