GNOME developers are making various changes to the open source desktop environment that should make it more suitable for embedded environments . Future versions of GNOME will include improved compatibility with styluses and performance enhancements, according to GNOME Foundation director Murray Cumming on Friday.

At a press conference in San Francisco, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is expected to announce a new partnership between Microsoft and Novell . The unprecedented deal will have Microsoft offering a degree of sales support for Novell's SUSE Linux while both companies work towards better interoperability between their respective operating systems.

To help curb the growing number of waste contributed by bottled water- and soda-drinkers at the schools, Madison County Recycling this year began providing bins for recycled plastic bottles and Highland Recycling agreed to pick up recycled plastic at schools. Plastic is an enormous source of waste along with the cardboard.
