Microsoft backs Icahn's Yahoo revolt
Microsoft Corp. threw its weight behind investor Carl Icahn's effort to oust Yahoo Incorporated's board next month, saying Monday that a successful rebellion would encourage the Redmond, Wash.-based software maker to renew its takeover bid for Yahoo or negotiate another multibillion-dollar deal.

I find myself using a number of OSes daily but for the OSes I use most, I have some favorite third party applications that I can't live without. Here are my application lists for Windows, Unix/Linux, Mac OS X and BeOS; applications I always download and install after a clean OS installation.

The Acorn brand will be used to launch a range of PC laptops at a computer show next week. The lack of connection shown between the new company behind the apparent revival and the Acorn of old is unclear, provoking a furious reaction from a number of RISC OS users.

Recent news tells us Apple is still struggling to gain market share in the personal computer market. That's too bad. While I have some beefy grieves with Apple (being that I am an IT "expert" and all that), their systems nonetheless beat the proverbial tars out of the typical Windows PC crowd.

The Mozilla Foundation plans to "shortly" release new versions of its Firefox and Mozilla Web browsers to address a recently disclosed serious security bug as well as several additional flaws, a representative said Wednesday.

More often than not, the question arises on OSNews why certain projects or pieces of abandonware aren't released as open source software. Supposedly, this would speed up development, facilitate the growth of a community, all that jazz associated with open source development.

Phoronix has published an article covering a majority of the changes that will be making their way into NVIDIA's next Linux display drivers : the 1.0-9XXX series. Of the changes to come is Quad SLI, improved nvidia-xsettings, GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, OpenGL 2.1, GLSL 1.2, and other fixes.
