There are many 'really alternative' operating systems currently in existence. Most of them are purely for research, personal enjoyment or as a coding sandbox. Some of them, however, want to achieve wider acceptance. Is that goal obtainable, in the current OS climate?

You-know-who and its software
First a warning. This column may have all of the qualities, including the lack of offered solutions, of the ravings of an angry geezer. Today’s rant is about the computer industry, in particular the software industry, and in particular the maker of the operating system on which most PCs operate.

Video Recap of Weekly Search Buzz :: July 13, 2008
This may be the quickest recap I have done. I typically have to keep it under 10 minutes, due to the YouTube restrictions but this is even shorter. Why? Because I produced it on Friday, the day I got the iPhone - so I was tired. Yahoo and Live Search had major search updates. Google added search volume data to their keyword tool. Microsoft adCenter may be overtaking Yahoo Search Marketing. ...

I’m tired. Really I am. I’m tired of hearing refrain after refrain of how Microsoft played hardball with Yahoo, only to capitulate to an increase of its initial purchase offer. I’m tired of Yahoo’s CEO masking his personal opposition to a buyout by Redmond with lawyerly evasions and his clear conviction that the publicly-owned company [...]
