"The Linux community was left stunned when Windows Server software outsold Linux in the server market. Gartner, Inc. recently reported that sales of Windows systems accounted for nearly 37 percent of all server revenue in the last quarter while Linux accounted for 31.7 percent.

Security vendors have reported several new variants of the worm infecting PCs running Microsoft's Windows 2000 operating system. Groups of virus writers are competing to cause the most damage, according to one security company, although the worm appears less severe than some first feared.

False metric -- and just plain wrong. Consumers don't install operating systems. OEMs do. Therefore, the only metric that has any meaning is the number of copies of an OS that are shipped on OEM machines. By that standard, both Windows *and* Linux are losing market to Apple.
